Week 4 Post 1: Subway and Hungry Bear

On week 5 we used website design to compare two similar businesses in order to find differences in their target audience.

Subway:

The moment you open their website Subway greets you with their current promotion "IT'S FOOTLONG SEASON". The website is very organized and is easy to navigate, you can also see the color scheme they went for was their company colors, yellow and green. At the moment it is very apparent that the target demographic they are going for is all the football lovers. The reason I believe this is because Subway website has a poster also stating they are "The official sandwich sponsor of the NFL" after their first add. They also want to appeal to citizens who want to support a business that started in the USA. On their about us page they start by showing a caption saying, they "started small in the USA". They also seem to want to appeal to environmentalist by adding a link on how they as a company is currently "Making Change" through nutrition, community and environment. In all the website is informative on the company and does paint them in a positive picture, the colors where also well chosen drawing my eye in toward the larger letters.

Hungry Bear:

Hungry bear opens up with multiple subtle pictures in the background of what I can only assume to be their sandwiches. The color scheme is good because it compliments the logo. They also make a bold statement right off the bat claiming "The best subs and sandwich in San Diego". This is all well done but it shows the target audience they want to attract are people who are local to the area. I also believe their target audience is local residents because the first writing you see is the address. They also seem to want to appeal to Californians because their logo is a bear with a bib holding a sandwich looking similar to the California state flag. Their about page just has one paragraph stating they were based off of Vista, Ca and they have the best sub is San Diego. No evidence just a lot of sandwich photos.

Key Differences:

In all both websites did a great job with their design, aesthetics and branding. Although they both chose completely different colors they were done well and complimented the website. The main difference would have to be the about page. Subway used this page to expand to as many audiences as they could in a short page. They also explained a lot and redirected you toward other links. Opposed to the Hungry Bear who decided to only give you one paragraph and a lot of photos. I guess it works out if you are just hungry and want to get a sandwich not carrying where its coming from, but if you want to know about the website then Subway would win. There is definitely a cross over in audience between the two companies, they want people who love sandwiches however Subway is more broad; while, Hungry Bear is just catering to local sandwich lovers.
