Week 2 Part B: Brewery Business Research

Black Plague Brewing

Black Plague Brewing is a local brewery located in Oceanside, CA. Founded in 2015 by Jordan Hoffart and Jarred Doss they first opened their doors in June 2017; they are the newest brewery business on this list. Black Plague Brewing's vision is to bring "misfits...rule-breakers...nonconformist...and people who follow their true passion" together over delicious beer.

Black Plague uses the following social media accounts Facebook, Twitter, Linkdin, Instagram and Youtube.

Belching Beaver Brewery

Belching Beaver is another local brewery; however, unlike Black Plague they have more than one location. Established in 2012 by Thomas Vogel, Dave Mobley, and brewmaster Troy Smith, this business began with a milk stout and slowly progressed into creating different products such as IPA's. All their locations are kid and dog friendly.

Belching Beaver uses the following social media accounts Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Stone Brewing

Stone Brewing unlike our first two businesses is a national brewery. Granted they do have the majority of their locations in California; however, since there is a location Richmond, VA, they are considered national. Founded in 1996 in San Diego County by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, they made a name for themselves by making sure they were awarded the title of the ninth-largest craft brewer in the U.S.

Stone Brewing uses the following social media accounts Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.

All-Wise Meadery

All-Wise Meadery was placed second to last of the list because although new and only having one location in New York, this business was founded by a celebrity, Dylan Sprouse. All-Wise Meadery also specializes in Mead which is considered the oldest alcoholic drink known to man made through fermenting honey.

The social media accounts All-Wise Meadery uses are Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

St. James Gate Brewery

Lastly we have St. James Gate Brewery also known as Open Gate Brewery. The name may not sound familiar their beer is know all around the world as Guinness. Founded in 1759 in Dublin, Ireland by Arthur Guinness this company became the largest in Ireland in 1838, and by 1886 had became the largest in the world.

This being the oldest brewery on our list does not have any social media accounts.

In Conclusion...

I was not at all surprised the newest brewing business on our list, Black Plague Brewing has the most amount of social media accounts. The reason behind me not being surprised you may ask? Well that's easy. This business began when technology and new social media sites were growing. If you are starting a new business in this day and age you should definitely have some sort of social media, even if it is minimal such as the Belching Beaver Brewery.

What did surprise me was that St. James Gate Brewery, opted to have no social media accounts at all. They decided to stay relevant through word of mouth and advertisement it seems. Although it does seem to work out for them I believe they should have made the effort to at least make an instagram page in order to try to connect to their fan base a little. And they definitely have one on Instagram since I noticed they have a hashtag with more than 1000 posts with it.

I was also surprised that although All-Wise Meadery is owned by Dylan Sprouse, he opted for not having any sort of information on himself on the website. You need to physically go on google in order to find out he is the founder and CEO of this business. Although I would understand why he would want to do that. (Making sure his business is about the business rather than his celebrity status and all.) If I was him I would have used the buzz of being a celebrity to drive a different clientele into the business that he is not currently benefitting from. But that just me.

Comments

  1. Hi Engir! I liked how you chose to stick to one business type in the brewery world. Do you own a brewery or work for one?

I too find it interesting that St. James Gate doesn't have social media, especially since a lot of young people love breweries and we are the ones on social media. Very unique advertisement method if you ask me. I do wish you provided more specific information on their platforms so we could see what you were talking about.

I agree that social media is pretty much required in this day to stay relevant with people.

  2. Hi Engir,
Since you researched all breweries, it was interesting to read about the differences used across companies in the same field. It's such a surprise to have a company that does not engage in social media at all, but still manages to be successful. Of course, you have to have the product and clientele to back it up.
I also had Cara's curiosity. What ties you to breweries? Are you a basement brewer? That's my guess.
